Don’t expect this post to teach you detailed steps of “getting out of the rat race”.
But it will definitely teach you how to view your money and think twice about buying a new iPhone or TV.
If you want to learn to change your financial habits and/or pin point where growth should happen in your life, then read on.
I’m talking about the cashflow game…
The game that literally changed my life forever!
It definitely takes some time and mental investment to play…
But here’s the thing..
You’ll have so much fun the “educational game” stigma won’t apply. It does make you start thinking about money management in a different way.
This is NOT a game, it’s a Financial Education packaged in a board game!
Okay, enough with the hype.
Allow me to share with you my experience playing it.
It all started with this…

With my lovely friends during our Boracay escapade. 😉
Now, you’re probably asking…
“Wait, what does that even have to do with the board game??”
What I thought was just a fun escapade, turned out to be the highlight of my year!
You see…
I only hoped for a great island get away. I wanted to take some time off the busyness of this world.
I’ve been hustling here and there that now, all I needed was a break!
Voila, the Boracay escapade happened!
Little did I know, I was set up for another work. ( packaged in a good way! 😉 )
A little Backstory
If there’s one place in the Philippines everyone in the world knows about, it’s Boracay. It is famous for its beautiful beaches!
The beaches are often called “paradise lost” because of their white sand, which is incredibly soft.
Boracay is one of the liveliest places in the Philippines–which is also the reason why it was closed in April 2018.
It was closed for exactly 6 months to rehabilitate the island. In October 2019, the island was opened again.
We were there a little over a month when it was open to the public.
We arrived in the gorgeous island with Mr Sun smiling at us!
The plan was simple…
To Have Fun!!
Did I say fun??
Choosing to stay in this beautiful island was one of the best decisions I’ve made.
The location was great and there were lots to do in the area.. We took a swim in the afternoon and had such a wonderful time!
By now, you may already have an idea how happy our Boracay escapade went, right?
I know, it may sound like I’m veering away from the rat race topic I was talking to you about.
But I’m not.
So here’s what you’ve been waiting for…
Fast forward to our last night…
The Most Unforgettable Night of My Life!
Who wouldn’t want to maximize his/her stay in this beautiful island??
They say, it will never be complete without the spirit of alcohol in your body.
I’m talking about party! (and beer 😉 …lots of it)
That’s exactly what happened during our last night.
I was already tipsy at 7pm when suddenly something happened…
Bro Ebb (our leader), came to us while handling this board game.
“Let’s play!”
My excitement just started to dwindle! I don’t know but I was just not excited to play the game.
After all, to say that I was sleepy was underrated!
But hey, I said yes anyway.
Let the Game Begin!
Did I already mention that I was already tipsy? And sleepy?! My body cries to go to bed! Grrrrrr….
“Okay, so this game will take us 2 hours to complete”
Our leader Ebb said.
In my mind, I was telling…
“How do I stand 2-hour long board game when my mind is telling me to go to bed??”
Ebb continues…
“We’ll take a quick break at the half and should you decide to still continue playing the game, just let me know.
See what happened there??
That means, during the half, I’m going to have a reason not to continue (*wink *wink).. Yayyyy!

Game face on! (Jayson, Ebb, JM)
The plan was set!
Can I be very honest here? I was just trying to convince myself that I was enjoying. (well sort of)
Man, I was dead tired! I was sleepy!
But I had to push on!
The only way to get out of the rat race is when your passive income is greater than your expenses!
That was the main objective of the game. ( at least based on my own understanding)
That is to help you get out of the common cycle of financial problems faced by most people.
Robert Kiyosaki calls this cycle THE RAT RACE!
“Is this board game trying to talk to me? It was as if it was telling me to get out of the rat race.”
All game long, I’ve been having these thoughts in mind.
At long last, after 63 minutes of playing, the 1st half of the game ended!
Which means all I needed to do was to escape, correct?
Wrong!
I know that was the original plan.
But there was a problem.
I needed to get out of the rat race! (which I was not after the half)
My competitive spirit began to kick in. Forget about my being tired and sleepy…
Now the game plan has changed!
My passive income should be greater than my expenses.
So I went on to continue playing the game. After all, how do I sleep sound if I know I haven’t succeeded yet?
It was like a game changer for me. My blood was rushing through my veins again.
I’m awake! I’m alive! I’m alert!
“I have to get out of the rat race!!”
That was my mantra as we were starting the 2nd half. Boy it was hard, but I was determined!
This time, not only was I attentive, but I started to learn the ins and outs of the game.
I was like dealing with my reality.
My future was at stake.
True enough, after 2 hours of playing, not only was I able to achieve my goal. I exceeded it!
I have nothing but superlatives for this Cashflow Game!
Guess what??
I earned a whopping 23,000,000 amount of passive income!!
Isn’t that amazing?!
The game thought me several lessons.
But if there’s one lesson I will never forget for the rest of my life? It is this…
In order to get out of the race, your passive income should be greater than your expenses!
Boom!
You can forget about everything but not this one great lesson.
That, for me, is the main highlight of my Boracay trip.
While I had so much fun, it gave me this great realization…
All my life, I have been working for money.
If you remember, the reason why I had this trip, is to have a breather.
Why? Because I’ve been hustling so hard I needed to take a break!
I mean there’s nothing wrong with that.
But I guess, all these things are active income.
And I needed to have a cashflow that earns me passive income every single month. Such that even if I’m no longer working, I still get paid.
I needed to have passive income flowing. It is an income that requires little to no effort to earn and maintain.
Why?
I need to get out of the rat race!
It Takes One Great Experience to Teach You One Great Lesson
You see…
Things happen in our lives. It takes one great experience to teach you one great lesson!
For me, this Boracay trip says it all.
This has led me to creating my greatest goal. It is this…
My goal is for my passive income to be 100X greater than my expenses!
Sounds outlandish? I know it will come. It’s just a matter of time.
Everyone starts somewhere. And for me, this is the start.
If I may quote what Robert Kiyosaki says that the Cashflow game believes…
“We believe the best way to learn isn’t done reading textbooks or listening to lectures. We believe the best learning is accomplished by doing the real thing.”
How about you? If there’s one experience that changed your life for the better, what would that be?
Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
Rooting for you,
March Nacino
